About LUG-Jaipur

We are a community of FOSS lovers in and around the city of Jaipur, India. The group was formed in March 2009, when some of us met out of our common interests in the world of FOSS and then decided to take things a step further. LUG-J meets physically once a month to exchange ideas and help each other as far as technical issues are concerned. Apart from this we also hold regular discussions on the mailing list as well as on our IRC channel. We currently boast of members from various parts of India who like to be associated with us, who help us grow as a LUG, because we believe in the fact that there are no boundaries in the world of FOSS.

Goals

There is no master plan for LUG-J at the moment, which is perfectly inline with the fact that even FOSS is free from bureaucracy and centralized control. But we do try and stick to the following core goals:

Advocacy

  • We believe in free and open source software and we like to talk about it in any form and any where. Every effort possible will be taken by the group and its members to achieve to advocate in what we strongly believe in. Members openly speak out on issues of concern in order to exert some influence on behalf of the ideas behind FOSS and to bring a change in the community where we live in.

Education

  • Beside preaching free and open source philosophy, LUG-J members also take an extra effort to teach not just Free and Open Source technologies but computers as a whole, in as much time as he/she can devote as a volunteer. We organize seminars/workshops/install-fests and other interactive activities to get people involved.

Support

  • We provide support in terms of knowledge, study material, media, installations or any other technical assistance whatsoever to anyone, but we would refrain from providing any support if it is to be used solely for the purpose of profit generation or in other words cater to the closed source world. We believe knowledge is to be shared and should be kept away from the clutches of greediness.

Socializing

  • We also like to have fun and spend some quality time discussing things that really matter and grow ourselves. This is symbolic in our open meetings where anyone can come who shares the same values as we do. And that is evident in our social events like release parties, or simply the freedom, in software and also as in a individual human being. Everyone is free to contact us and get the above mentioned services and we would like to oblige in whatsoever form it may be available.
